I don't think there's a lot to break here and most people only use these every month or two. While I'm sure there are units that break or are out of calibration, I've never run across a person who has had a problem with one. I've had my i1Pro, keep it in the tiniest Pelican case you can get and it's never given me a problem. That is the unfortunate truth of living in a disposable world. On an item as inexpensive as this, it sorta makes sense as pretty much any out of warranty repair is going run close to or more than just buying a new unit. That there are far fewer funky X-Rite i1Display Pro units is worth the piece of mind. It's not that you can't get a good Spyder, you can, but they are a lot more variable in terms of individual quality than X-Rite. I've only used it on a laptop, but that works fine. I later bought a NEC monitor with the i1/Spectraview system and its performance has been flawless. My experience with the Spyder was not positive, although this was a few years back when it was at version 2.
